How Australia's leading Wagyu producer replaced a legacy database with a platform built for growth

The Challenge
Blackmore Wagyu has spent more than 25 years building one of Australia's most respected fullblood Wagyu operations. The family-owned business breeds, raises and supplies premium Wagyu beef to high-end restaurants, gourmet butchers and export markets across 14 countries - and managing that operation demands an extraordinary level of data discipline.
Every animal has a story. From genetics and breeding programs through to feeding, processing and final sale, the business tracks thousands of data points across its entire herd. For years, a highly customised Microsoft Access database carried that weight. It worked until it didn't.
As the business grew, the cracks became harder to ignore. The legacy system couldn't support mobile access for field teams, struggled to maintain data integrity across increasingly complex operations, and required significant manual administration to keep it running. Off-the-shelf livestock management systems were assessed and ruled out as none came close to meeting the depth of functionality that Blackmore Wagyu's unique production methodology required.
The business needed a modern platform that could manage the complete lifecycle of every animal, scale with future growth, and give its teams real visibility across the herd.
The Solution
Kiandra partnered with Blackmore Wagyu to design and build a custom cloud-based livestock management platform - a single source of truth for the entire operation, built on Microsoft Azure.
The platform replaced the legacy Access database with a scalable, secure and highly accessible solution, incorporating purpose-built modules across every area of the business.
Animal Management Complete lifecycle tracking for every animal, covering identification and registration, veterinary treatments, weight monitoring, movements, processing and assessment data, and full historical activity records.
Breeding and Genomics Advanced functionality to support Blackmore Wagyu's specialised breeding programs, including artificial insemination and embryo transfer programs, pregnancy testing and monitoring, calving and weaning management, and genomics data import and analysis.
Farm Operations Tools to manage day-to-day farm activities including paddock management, infrastructure maintenance, machinery servicing, pest and weed control, and breakdown tracking.
Inventory Management Full visibility across feed commodities, treatment medications, embryo and semen storage, and livestock purchases and sales.
Reporting and Analytics Integration with Microsoft Power BI to deliver rich dashboards, operational reporting and business intelligence across the operation.
Usability was a central focus throughout the project. Kiandra applied a user-centred design approach to ensure the platform worked for users across a wide range of technical skill levels - from office staff to field teams working with tablets and mobile devices in the paddock. Role-based permissions, SSL encryption, comprehensive audit capabilities and regular security and penetration testing ensured sensitive business and livestock data remained protected.
The Outcome
By replacing a deeply customised but increasingly constrained legacy database with a modern cloud platform, Blackmore Wagyu gained the operational foundation it needed to grow with confidence.
The new platform delivered improved visibility across the entire animal lifecycle, stronger data integrity and consistency, and a significant reduction in manual administration and duplicate data entry. Field teams gained mobile access to the system for the first time. Reporting and analytics gave decision-makers better insight into operations across the business.
Critically, the platform was built to scale giving Blackmore Wagyu a digital foundation capable of supporting one of Australia's most sophisticated Wagyu production operations well into the future.
